Remembering Stanislav Lakoba: Historian, Statesman, Mentor

Following the death of Stanislav Lakoba on 20 September, tributes from across Abkhazia continue to highlight the extraordinary contribution he made to the country’s historical scholarship, state-building and public life.
Lakoba, who died aged 73 after suffering a heart attack while driving, leaves behind a legacy that has shaped modern understandings of Abkhazia’s past and aspirations for its future.
Lakoba was widely regarded as one of Abkhazia’s foremost historians and Caucasus scholars. He served as Chief Researcher at the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of the Dyrmit Gulia Abkhaz Institute for Humanitarian Research, Professor at Abkhazian State University, and Academician of the Adyghe International Academy of Sciences. A recipient of the Akhdz-Apsha Order (2nd Class), he co-authored the landmark 1989 Lykhny Appeal and the widely used textbook History of Abkhazia.
Beyond academia, Lakoba played a pivotal role in public service. He served as Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council (1991–1996) and later as Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Abkhazia. Known for his strategic thinking and principled stance, he helped shape Abkhazia’s path to statehood and international recognition.
Tributes from across Abkhazia have underscored the breadth of his influence. Viacheslav Chirikba, Director of the Centre for Strategic Studies under the President of Abkhazia, described Lakoba as an “outstanding scholar, historian and public figure whose life was inseparably linked with the fate of the Abkhaz people and the statehood of Abkhazia.”
The People’s Assembly – Parliament of Abkhazia praised him as “an outstanding personality” whose name is closely tied to “the struggle of the Abkhaz people for freedom and independence and to the state-building of the Republic of Abkhazia.” The statement also highlighted his academic and educational work, noting that his professionalism, integrity and creative energy “will continue to set the standard for all who knew and worked with him.”
Musa Ekzekov, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the World Abaza Congress, called Lakoba “a beacon” for many in Abkhazia and beyond. “He was an outstanding scholar, historian, public figure and a man of rare talent, knowledge and energy,” he said. “For me, and for many others, Stanislav Lakoba was a reference point – someone who always spoke the truth and helped others see things in a new light.”
Friends and colleagues have also recalled his personal warmth. Publicist and close friend Nadezhda Venediktova described him as both strong-willed and deeply compassionate, with a gift for strategic thinking that was evident even in his youth as a talented footballer.
Lakoba’s writings, public service and teaching have left an enduring mark on Abkhazia’s historical consciousness and its political life. As the country mourns his passing, many see his life as a testament to the power of scholarship, civic duty and moral integrity.
