Is Quoting Ardzinba, Iskander, Shinkuba Considered Vandalism?
Activists Detained, Protests Erupt, and Public Figures Speak Out on Multiple Issues in Abkhazia.
Yesterday, May 4th, members of the initiative group "ҲараҲПицунда" (Our Pitsunda) were detained after displaying protest posters in Sukhum. They were rallying against the anti-Abkhazian law on apartments, among other issues.
In recent events across Abkhazia, various groups and individuals have taken to the streets to voice their concerns on pressing issues. Authorities have responded with a heavy hand in some instances, detaining activists and charging them with "minor hooliganism." Meanwhile, public figures have weighed in on the debates, and protests continue to unfold.
Members of the youth movement "ҲараҲПицунда" were detained by officers of the Internal Affairs Department in Sukhum for hanging banners with quotes from Vladislav Ardzinba, Fazil Iskander, Bagrat Shinkuba, and the Constitution of Abkhazia. The activists were charged with Article 166 "Minor Hooliganism," drawing criticism from human rights defenders and sparking debates on freedom of expression.
In parallel, protesters have taken to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the new apartment law, environmental concerns, and the state of the nation's sovereignty and security. Despite the authorities' attempts to suppress the public outcry, demonstrations persist as citizens push for change.
Prominent public figures, including former Deputy Prosecutor General Eshsou Kakalia and Lawyer Said Gezerdava, have joined the conversation, calling into question the legality and fairness of the charges against the "ҲараҲПицунда" activists. As tensions rise, it remains to be seen how the Abkhazian government will respond to the ongoing civil unrest and calls for reform.
